Responsibility Comes First

I Walk in Ever Increasing Health

We all know of many people who suffer untold pain from debilitating diseases and yet, they are strong believers who walk closely with the Lord. We ask ourselves, “Why?” Why are these good people afflicted? Why doesn’t God heal them? When the children at Sandy Hook Elementary were murdered, where was God?

For decades, non-believers use the plight of close friends, and the devastation that strikes worldwide as an excuse to push God into the recesses of their thinking. The phrase ‘taking responsibility’ comes to mind. We don’t want to accept the fact that we live in a fallen world, where disease and tragedy are the norm, not because God wants to punish us, but because we are a disobedient lot and the decisions we make result in the chaos we see around us.

But … in Isaiah 53:4-5, the prophet tells us, “Surely He took up our pain and bore our suffering and yet we considered Him punished by God, stricken by Him, and afflicted but He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities. The Punishment that brought us peace was on Him and by His wounds we are healed.” First of all, this talks about Spiritual healing. For many, that’s where physical healing begins. Remember … this was written over 1000 years before Jesus ever went to the cross.

Isaiah tells us that Jesus took, not will take, but took. Even though He hadn’t done it yet, as far as the world could tell, Isaiah tells us that it’s a done deal. When it happened, I am sure there were many who thought as Isaiah describes. God punished Jesus. The fact is, Jesus went willingly so that we could be healed, so that we could have a way to make wise choices, an example to follow.

We are responsible for the state that the world is in and we are responsible for our health. But God heals either before we get sick, or during the illness, or when we get to heaven. I am healed because I believe that Jesus died on that cross for me because I needed Him to. I am a sinner and there was nothing I could do to help myself. I needed a perfect Savior and Jesus was the perfect substitute. He opened a way for me to walk through this sin-filed world sinless.

Our belief in Jesus heals us. God either protects us from a trial and we never see it, or He walks with us through the trial, or He takes us to heaven where there will be no more trials. Believers who suffer know this and just draw closer to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, knowing that their suffering will end … in God’s time and in God’s way.

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you have access to the truth of His healing power. You can walk through anything because you know, that whatever it is that you are enduring, it will end and in the meantime, your relationship with God will increase as you lean fully on Him.
