The wind whistled through Scruffles' thin coat. Winter was coming. The little field mouse shivered. "I need a home." Her teeth chattered. She scurried towards town, a small community but one that provided many warm, cozy places to spend the cold winter months ahead. She skittered this way and that, avoiding the cars and trucks spewing their nasty fumes. A large building covered in red brick caught her eye.
"That looks like it would make a good home," she squeaked to no one in particular. Scruffles scampered across the grass, which was still green but turning crisp with cold. She darted along the edge of the building until she found a tiny hole in the foundation. She wriggled first one way and then another until her small body squeezed through.
Scruffles shook herself and looked left, then right. Stairs pointed her in the direction of a large reception area. She dashed around the corner ever mindful of her surroundings in case some people were living there. A small snowy looking structure looked inviting. It was rounded on the top and sides with a flat bottom. Just my size. Scruffles thought.
